My opinion

Today, the Legislative Branch tried to pass another "recall" against President Chen Shui Bian. They also promise to do it again next month. This is getting ridiculous. As an American, I value the right to protest and the right to recall. However, there has to be point to where the protest or recall actually hurts Taiwan. The protest has shifted. At first, the protest was well defined. The purpose was clear. As the protest has grown longer, the focus seems to be on the protest itself. When that happens, the protest loses not only its purpose, but also, its power. The recall is a waste of time, money, and resources. They know that the "pan-green" camp will not participate in the debate or vote. There is one other alternative: a referendum. The problem with this is that when the "pan-blue" pass the referendum law, they set it too high. 75% of REGISTERED voters must pass. That means if the "pan-greens" boycott the vote, it will not even be close to passing. Last year, the Legislature only passed 11 bills. 11 bills the whole year! This year, it may be worse. If they would turn their attention to the social and economic problems of Taiwan, maybe they can win the trust of the ordinary Taiwanese. Until they do, there will always be tension and conflict. It is also time that the Taiwanese to realize that they are Taiwanese; not Chinese. But, that is another post. Please feel free to comment.
